🌸 My Story — From Guilt to Grace
Hola Mamita, I’m Laila. 💛
I grew up in Guadalajara, Mexico, with a Mexican papá and an American mamá. Spanish was my first language. It was natural, effortless, and always around me.
But when I got married and moved to the U.S., everything changed. Suddenly, I was the only Spanish speaker in my home. The entire responsibility to keep Spanish alive for my children rested 100% on me.
And let me tell you — it wasn’t easy.
I didn’t get it right the first time. Or even the second. With my two oldest daughters, I slipped too much into English. I caved under the pressure. And worse than that… I listened to everyone else’s opinions.
“Just speak English — it’s easier.”
“Don’t confuse the kids.”
“You’re stressing too much.”
Everywhere I turned, someone had advice. And instead of helping, it just left me drowning in guilt and shame. I felt like no one understood how heavy this responsibility really was.
Some nights, I cried myself to sleep. I felt like I was failing my daughters… like I was failing my culture. I was so close to giving up — ready to quit and just raise them in English. At least then the pressure and the judgment would stop.
But deep down, I knew I couldn’t. I wanted my children to feel proud of their roots. I wanted them to have the gift of both languages — even if it felt impossible.

By then, I had learned from my mistakes. I knew what didn’t work — and little by little, I discovered what actually did. I let go of perfection. I found ways to weave Spanish back into our everyday life in a way that felt natural, loving, and doable.
